The JEGS ET Series Super Pro class is always one of the toughest classes at National Trail Raceway. In 2020, the championship points race came down to two fierce competitors, Scott Hessler and Austin Eveland, battling it out for the top spot. When it was all said and done, it was former Super Pro track champion, Scott Hessler at the top of the points sheet in September.
The season got off to a very late start for Hessler as he was getting his new car ready to race. With COVID pushing the start of the JEGS ET Series into June it meant, Hessler only missed two races. Once the ’69 Camaro hit the track, he started to make up ground very quickly after only racing at six events. Hessler managed to move into the top 8 in the points championship.
The first weekend of August saw Hessler make up some very valuable ground as he clicked off a semi-final finish and a second-round finish. It moved him into second place behind points leader Austin Eveland. At the next points weekend, Hessler would go 5 rounds to Eveland’s 3 rounds on Saturday during the “Fog Nationals”. On Sunday, the final round came down to Hessler and Eveland with the points lead on the line as well as the Race of Champions spot at Indy. It was Eveland getting the better of Hessler and leaving with the points lead by only 2 points.
The final points weekend in September saw Hessler go 4 rounds on Saturday which put him into the lead for the championship as Eveland bowed out in the first round. Sunday, Hessler lost in the first round for the first time all season, giving Eveland the opportunity to win the championship. Eveland had to go to the semi-finals that day, but it was not to be as he lost in the 3rd round. Meaning Scott Hessler was the 2020 JEGS ET Series Super Pro champion.
“This year was absolutely crazy, getting the new car ready for the season and having to play catchup all year in the points was just nuts. I have to give a special thanks to my crew, Shawnee, Mike, Doc and Tony they were there week in and week out supporting me,” said Hessler. “I also want to say thank you to my good friends Brian Bell, Sean Graham, Paul Burgess, Chris Boyd and Sean Robson for not only being great friends but also be great competitors to race against.”
Hessler says the plans for 2021 are to try and defend the title and have some fun at the track. He also plans on racing some bigger money events as well to try and sharpen his skills.
