GTR Crash at Deals Gap – Tail of the Dragon – How to Help

Mohamed Elabbady Avatar

The "Tail of the Dragon," a famous stretch of road (U.S. 129) with 318 curves in 11 miles located in the Smoky Mountains, is known for its challenging terrain and popularity among motorcyclists and drivers. If you witness a crash here, follow these steps: 1. Ensure Personal Safety
Pull over safely out of the way of traffic.
Turn on hazard lights to alert others.
Be cautious of oncoming vehicles; the road’s blind curves can make it dangerous.
2. Assess the Situation
Check for immediate danger, such as fire, leaking fuel, or unsafe positioning on the roadway.
Quickly evaluate the condition of the individuals involved, but do not move anyone unless they are in imminent danger.
3. Call Emergency Services
Dial 911 and provide precise details about the crash, including location (mile markers on the Tail of the Dragon can help pinpoint where you are).
Mention the number of vehicles involved, injuries observed, and any hazards (e.g., blocked road, leaking fluids).
4. Assist if Trained
Offer first aid if you're trained and it’s safe to do so.
Avoid moving injured individuals unless they are in immediate danger.
5. Direct Traffic if Needed
If possible, and without endangering yourself, use flares or wave other vehicles to slow down or stop until emergency services arrive.
6. Document and Communicate
Note details about the crash for emergency responders (vehicle makes, license plates, the number of occupants, etc.).
Take photos if safe, especially if law enforcement is not immediately available.
7. Stay Until Help Arrives
Remain on the scene unless directed otherwise by emergency personnel.
The Tail of the Dragon is patrolled, and help typically arrives quickly, but the remote nature of the area can occasionally delay response times. Staying calm and following these steps can make a critical difference in ensuring safety.
